Lake Wallace at Lithgow just got even more exciting with the release of 250 adult‑size Tiger Trout! These unique fish, grown at the NSW Government’s Gaden Trout Hatchery near Jindabyne, average 40 cm and 1.5 kg, making them a great catch for recreational fishers.
This stocking is part of a monitoring program run by NSW DPIRD researchers exploring the potential of these spectacular hybrid fish, created by crossing Brown Trout and Brook Trout, as a fresh addition to the NSW trout fishery.
Known for being an aggressive and hard fighting sportfish, Tiger Trout are expected to make an immediate splash in the Lake Wallace recreational fishery.
As a hybrid species, Tiger Trout are sterile and stocking is the only way a fishery can be established and maintained. Depending on the outcomes from the monitoring program, the potential creation of viable Tiger Trout fisheries in appropriate waterways may complement existing trout fisheries in the future.
With more releases of “catchable‑size” Tiger Trout scheduled for the Lithgow region in the coming weeks, fishers should gear up and head out to make the most of these new opportunities.
