With above average flows across NSW inland rivers, Fisheries officers have observed more offenders attempting to take fish using illegal fish traps. Fish traps are a known illegal fishing method which also indiscriminately impacts turtles, water birds and other wildlife.

Fisheries officers will continue to focus their efforts on protecting native fish populations from over exploitation by illegal fishers.

Fisheries rules and regulations are in place to protect and conserve fish stocks for future generations and this type of illegal fishing undermines the hard work fisheries officers, the community and our stakeholders do to ensure anglers have access to healthy fish stocks and fishing opportunities.

We need your help! If you have information about the unlawful take of native fish from NSW waters we would love to hear from you. Please reach out by calling the confidential Fishers Watch hotline on 1800 043 536 or submitting an online ‘Report illegal activity form’ here.
