This National Science Week, we’re celebrating how your fishing contributes to science!
Take Thomas He’s Snapper, caught and tagged at Long Reef, Sydney. This same fish was later recaptured 1 year and 3 months later off South Solitary Island near Coffs Harbour — an incredible 235 nautical miles from where it was first tagged.
Through the Game Fish Tagging Program, every tag card returned helps researchers:

  •  Track fish movements
  •  Monitor populations
  •  Keep our fisheries sustainable for the future

Whether your tagged fish was released last week or five years ago – your data matters!
This is one of the many exciting recaptures to be recently added to the Gamefish Tagging Program. If you’re lucky enough to catch a tagged fish please ensure you report it using the online recapture form link here.
Remember to return your tag cards to your local game fishing club or email: gamefish.tagging@dpi.nsw.gov.au.  All cards received before 31 August 2025 go in the draw to win a Game Fish Tagging Program T-shirt!
The Game Fish Tagging Program is another example of your recreational fishing fees at work.
