Barry Jonassen’s legacy
Members of the NSWCFA who have been involved since many years ago will remember Barry Jonassen, one our most passionate and committed members. Barry left a considerable bequest to the NSWCFA after his death; the interest income generated from bequest has helped keep us going over a few decades.
Barry also attended many of the annual conferences of the Australian Society for Fish Biology, even though he was not a scientist himself. NSWCFA member John Harris has recently sent us this note about Barry’s ongoing legacy to that organisation…
‘I recall introducing Barry Jonassen to the ASFB long ago, and his subsequent interest in the society’s conferences. That was unusual for an angler without any particular technical involvement other than representing angling interests. Nor was he particularly well off financially.
‘And yet, here’s a record of his establishment of a monetary award in perpetuity that continues to support worthwhile fisheries research many years after his death – it’s worth a look through the list of recipients and their work.
‘I salute his memory!’
